Sleeves Made for the Flat-Bottomed Cake Cone
A cake cone, sometimes called a wafer cone, is the light, pale cone with a flat bottom and a ridged, cup-like top. It is the cone most kids grow up on, the one served with soft serve at drive-ins, and the one bakeries use for cupcake-in-a-cone treats. Its shape is different from a pointed sugar cone or a wide waffle cone, and that changes what the sleeve has to do.
Cake cones are short, fairly straight-sided and soft. They crush if gripped hard, and the thin wafer softens quickly when melted ice cream soaks into it. A cake cone sleeve wraps the lower part of the cone, gives small hands something firm to hold and catches the drip that runs down the outside. Because the cone has a flat base, the sleeve is shorter and less tapered than a sugar cone sleeve, closer to a slightly flared band.
Cake, Sugar and Waffle Cones Compared
If you serve more than one cone type, each needs its own dieline. This comparison helps you plan quantities and shapes.
| Cone type | Shape | Sleeve shape | Where it's most common |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cake (wafer) cone | Flat bottom, short, straight sides | Short, gently flared band; can stop above the base | Soft serve, kids' cones, cupcake cones, school events |
| Sugar cone | Pointed, taller, crunchy | Tall, steep cone shape that wraps toward the tip | Scoop shops, soft serve twists |
| Waffle cone | Pointed, wide rim, large | Wide fan shape with a bigger print area | Premium scoops, multiple scoops |
For pointed cones, our printed sugar cone sleeves are cut steeper so they reach the tip, where sugar cones tend to leak.
Who Uses Cake Cone Sleeves, and for What
Cake cone sleeves turn up wherever the cone is cheap, quick and aimed at families. A few typical situations:
- Kids' menus. Diners and family restaurants hand a cake cone with a single scoop to children after a meal. A bright sleeve makes it feel like part of the meal rather than an afterthought.
- Soft serve windows. Drive-ins and roadside stands pull soft serve onto cake cones all summer. The flat base lets staff stand cones in a rack while they work the machine.
- Cupcake cones. Bakeries bake cake batter right inside the cone, then frost the top. A printed sleeve protects the fragile wafer in a display case and on the drive to a party.
- School and church events. Ice cream socials serve hundreds of cake cones in an hour. Sleeves keep tables clean and can carry the event name or a sponsor.
- Sampling. Mini cake cones work as tasting cones for new flavors at markets and grocery demos.
Design and Material Tips for Cake Cones
The printable area on a cake cone sleeve is smaller than on a waffle cone sleeve, so simplify. A logo, one short line of text and a pattern is plenty. Lettering should be large enough to read at arm's length, because a child holds the cone low. Bright, cheerful colors suit the cone's audience; for bakeries, pastels and a script logo match frosting colors well.
For material, lightweight paper or cardstock is usually right for cake cones, because the sleeve needs to wrap snugly without squeezing the soft wafer. Kraft gives a homemade bakery look. Choose a gloss coating if the sleeve will catch soft serve drips, since gloss wipes and resists moisture a little better than uncoated stock. Printing is available in CMYK or PMS colors, with foil, embossing and spot UV for special occasions such as weddings or baby showers, where cupcake cones are a favorite.
Standing cones upright
Because cake cones have a flat bottom, you can design the sleeve to stop just above the base so the cone still stands on a table or tray. That's useful for dessert tables and bakery displays. If you need a carrier for several cones at once, an ice cream cone holder for parties keeps them upright on the way to the table.
Keeping the wafer crisp
Cake cones go soft faster than any other cone, especially in humid weather. Keep cones and sleeves in separate sealed containers until service, sleeve each cone just before filling, and don't stack sleeved cones inside each other for long, because the wafer takes on moisture from the paper and from the air trapped between them. For events, set out cones in small batches rather than prepping a whole tray an hour early. A sleeve can't make a stale cone crisp again, but it does keep a fresh one from getting crushed on its way to the customer.
How to Order Cake Cone Sleeves
- Send the brand and size of the cake cone you use, or post one to us. Cake cones vary more in height than people expect.
- Decide whether the sleeve should cover to the base or stop above it.
- Share your logo file and colors, or ask for free design help.
- Review the proof and mockup; free samples let you test the fit on real cones.
- Approve and we print in 4–6 business days, with free shipping to the USA, Canada, UK and Australia.
The minimum is 100 sleeves, so a one-off party order is realiztic, and prices drop as volume rises. For a summer season, many soft serve stands order in larger batches and store the spare cartons flat and dry. If you want to compare against the other kids' format we make, see our child-size waffle cone sleeves.
Ordering two designs with matching artwork, one for kids and one for adults, is a simple way to keep the counter consistent.
