Small Cone Sleeves: For Minis, Tastings and Light Portions
Small cone sleeves are made for the little cones that don't fit a standard sleeve: mini sugar cones, bite-size cake cones, tasting cones and the half-scoop "baby" cone some shops list as their cheapest option. They are popular well beyond scoop shops. Caterers use mini cones for passed desserts at weddings and corporate events. Dessert bars build tasting flights of three or four tiny cones. Ice cream makers hand out mini cones at farmers markets and grocery demos so shoppers can try a flavor before buying a pint. Cafés offer a small cone as a light treat with an espresso.
A mini cone without a sleeve is fiddly. It's hard to pick up from a tray without touching the ice cream, it tips over, and the tiny tip drips quickly. A small sleeve fixes the grip, gives the cone a finished look, and turns something you give away for free into branded packaging. These are different from our child-size waffle cone jackets, which suit a full kids' portion on a waffle cone rather than a tasting bite.
What Fits a Small Sleeve
"Small" covers a range of shapes. We cut every order to your actual cone, so it helps to know which group yours falls into.
| Small cone type | Typical use | Sleeve approach | Print priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini sugar cone (bite size) | Passed desserts, tasting flights | Wraps nearly to the tip, closed point | Logo or monogram only |
| Mini cake cone | Kids' parties, market sampling | Short band; cone stands on its flat base | Logo plus one color |
| Small or "baby" scoop cone | Low-price menu item, light dessert | Standard jacket, scaled down | Logo and short name |
| Savory mini cone | Appetizers, canapé cones at events | Snug wrap, grease-resistant stock | Event or caterer branding |
Designing for a Tiny Print Area
The main challenge with small sleeves is space. A full-size waffle sleeve gives you room for a logo, a pattern and a tagline. A mini sleeve might have room for one of those. Design with that limit in mind and the result looks sharp rather than cramped.
- Use your simplest logo. If your brand has a monogram, an icon or a short version of the name, use it here. A long wordmark wraps out of sight around the curve.
- Bigger type than you think. Anything under about 7 points becomes hard to read on a curved, palm-sized surface.
- One or two colors. A single bold color with your logo knocked out in white reads from across a buffet table. Detailed full-color art turns into a blur at this size.
- Repeat the logo. A small logo repeated twice around the sleeve means one is always facing forward, whichever way the cone is placed.
- Skip QR codes. They need a flat, reasonably large area to scan. Put them on a table card instead.
Our free design help resizes your existing artwork for a small dieline, so you don't need to make a separate file yourself.
Material and Finish for Small Cones
Thin paper or light cardstock is usually best for small cones. A heavy board is hard to roll tightly around a narrow cone and can spring open. Kraft gives mini cones a rustic, wedding-friendly look. Gloss coating keeps colors bright and resists drips. For premium events, a gold, silver or rose-gold foil monogram on white or black is a common choice, and embossing works if the logo is simple and sits away from the fold. Printing is CMYK or PMS, with soy- and vegetable-based inks and recyclable or biodegradable stocks available on request.
Serving and display
Mini cones are rarely handed over one by one. They sit on a tray, a stand or a slotted holder while guests help themselves. Make sure the sleeve and the holder suit each other: a closed tip helps cones sit in holes without leaking, and a sleeve that stops above the base lets flat-bottom minis stand on a platter. If you're sampling at a market, you might find 2 oz paper tasting cups faster for some flavors, and many vendors offer both.
Sampling at markets and stores
When mini cones are used for sampling, the sleeve is often the only branding a shopper sees before deciding to buy. Print the brand name large and add the flavor or the store where your pints are sold. A shopper who liked the sample should know exactly what to look for.
Ordering Small Cone Sleeves
- Send us a mini cone, or tell us the brand and size so we can measure the taper.
- Decide on an open or closed tip, and whether the cone needs to stand on its base.
- Upload your logo or monogram. We'll suggest a simplified layout for the small area.
- Approve the proof and mockup; free samples are available to check fit.
- Production takes 4–6 business days after approval, with rush options for event dates, and shipping is free to the USA, Canada, UK and Australia.
The minimum order is 100 sleeves, which suits a single wedding or launch event, and volume discounts help if minis are a regular menu item. For ideas on using cones to drive sales, read how cone sleeves can increase ice cream sales; sampling is one of the strongest examples.
