A Lid Made From the Same Material as the Cup

A paper coffee cup lid is a molded or folded paperboard cap that presses onto the rim of a paper cup. It does the same job as the familiar plastic sip lid: it keeps heat in, stops splashes, and lets the customer drink on the move. The difference is the material. With a paper lid, the whole cup and lid are fiber-based, which matters to cafes that have moved away from single-use plastic or that operate in cities with plastic restrictions.

Coffee shops, juice bars, bakeries, office cafeterias and food trucks all use paper lids. They are also popular with roasters and specialty cafes that sell a premium experience and want the lid to feel as considered as the cup. Because the top of the lid is flat paperboard, it can be printed too, which plastic lids rarely allow.

Fit, Opening Style and Board

The single most important thing about a lid is that it fits. Lids are sized by the cup's rim diameter, not by ounces, and two 12 oz cups from different makers can have different rims. Opening style is the next choice. Each one suits a different drink:

Board for lids runs from 280 to 350 gsm. The heavier end gives a stiffer lid that snaps on more firmly and holds its shape when a customer presses on it. Kraft, recycled board and virgin pulp are all available. Kraft gives a natural look that pairs with brown cups; white virgin board gives the brightest print.

Printing on the Top of a Lid

A lid gives you a small round canvas that sits right under the customer's nose. Use it well:

• Center a simple logo or icon. Fine detail gets lost on a small circle.
• Keep print away from the sip hole and the rim lock, where the board is shaped or cut.
• Try a short line around the edge, like your shop name or a "Thank you" in a curve.
• Print a QR code for a loyalty app or menu if the lid is large enough, usually 16 oz and up.
• Use one or two colors. Flexographic and offset printing both give clean results on lid board.

Natural, gloss and matte finishes are available. A natural or matte finish feels softer against the lips, which some customers notice. CMYK and PMS printing both work, and PMS is the way to match the lid to an existing cup design exactly.

Using Paper Lids Day to Day

Paper lids are a little different from plastic ones in daily use. Press them on with an even push around the rim, rather than snapping one side first, so they seat fully. Store them flat in their cartons, in a dry spot, because lids that pick up moisture can lose their shape and fit loosely.

Expect paper lids to feel a little different to customers at first. They are slightly softer under the lips, they do not click as loudly when pressed on, and they have a matte, natural look. Most people stop noticing within a week or two. A small line on your menu board or the lid itself, such as "Plastic-free lid," tells customers the change was on purpose, which tends to head off questions at the counter.

Paper lids are also lighter than most plastic ones, so a carton of them takes up less room on a delivery truck and in your storeroom. Order a few weeks of stock at a time rather than a whole year, so lids stay fresh and dry.
