What a Wax Coating Does

Wax paper cups are the original disposable cup. Before plastic linings became common, paper cups were dipped or coated in wax so they could hold water without going soggy, and that is still how they work today. The wax fills the pores of the paper and forms a smooth barrier on the surface, so cold drinks stay in and the cup keeps its shape.

The key thing to know is that wax is for cold. Wax softens with heat, so these cups are not the right choice for coffee, tea or soup. Store wax cups in a cool, dry place. In very hot storage, like a car trunk in summer or a shed in direct sun, the wax can soften and cups may stick together in the stack. Keep them in their cartons until use. At an outdoor event, set the cup dispenser in the shade.
