A Coffee Sleeve Is the Ad Every Customer Carries

Think about where a coffee cup goes after it leaves your counter. Down the street, onto an office desk, into a car's cup holder, into a meeting, onto a train. A paper coffee cup sleeve rides along the whole way, wrapped around the part of the cup that people look at and hold. Its first job is comfort: hot coffee in a single-wall cup is uncomfortable to grip, and a sleeve adds a layer of paper and air between the drink and the hand. Its second job, and the one most café owners care about once the first is solved, is to carry your name to every place your coffee goes.

That second job is why a custom coffee sleeve is worth designing carefully rather than buying plain. A plain brown sleeve works. A printed sleeve with your logo, a reason to come back and a way to find you works harder, every single cup.

Matching Sleeve Size to Your Cups

"What size coffee sleeve do I need?" is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer is that it depends on your cup, not just its ounce rating. Cups from different manufacturers taper at different angles, so a 12 oz cup from one supplier can be wider or narrower than another's. The table shows how the common hot cup sizes are usually used and what to expect from the sleeve.

What to Print on a Coffee Sleeve

A sleeve has a front panel that faces the customer and a back panel that faces whoever is sitting across from them. Use both.

• Logo on the front, large and centered, so it shows in photos and when the cup sits on a desk.
• A QR code on the back pointing to your online ordering, loyalty sign-up or menu. Keep it on a flat-looking area away from the seam and at least an inch wide so phones scan it.
• Your handle or web address in plain type. Short and readable beats clever.
• A seasonal message such as a pumpkin spice launch, holiday drinks or a summer cold brew menu. Short runs make this affordable.
• A local touch: your neighborhood, your roaster, or "made here since" with your opening year.

Leave the seam area and the top and bottom edges free of important text; those areas curve and get handled most.

Printing, Stock and Finish

Kraft sleeves with one dark ink are the classic café look, honest and warm. White sleeves show full-color art and exact brand colors best. For a simple logo in one or two colors, PMS printing keeps the color identical from one order to the next; for illustrations and photos, use CMYK. Corrugated sleeves with a ribbed inner layer add grip and a little more insulation for very hot drinks. Matte coatings feel soft and look premium; gloss makes colors brighter. A foil-stamped logo in gold or copper on kraft is a popular upgrade for specialty roasters and holiday runs.

Sleeves ship flat and take little room under the counter. Keep cartons dry and away from the espresso machine's steam wand, and pull a day's worth at a time.

Hot cups and cold cups need different sleeves

Paper hot cups and plastic cold cups have different shapes, and iced drinks drip condensation. If you sell a lot of cold brew and iced lattes, our printed iced coffee sleeves are cut for cold cups.

Using sleeves for promotions

Because a sleeve costs far less than a cup, it is the cheapest piece of packaging to change for a promotion. A sleeve announcing a new single-origin coffee, a punch-card offer or a local charity partnership reaches every customer for a few weeks, then goes back to your everyday design.

1. List the cup sizes you serve and how many of each you sell in a typical week.
2. Send us one of each cup, or the cup dimensions, so we can confirm which sizes can share a sleeve.
3. Prepare your logo as a vector file (AI, EPS or PDF) and decide what goes on the back panel.
4. Choose kraft or white stock, smooth or corrugated, and the print method.
5. Review the digital proof, approve it, and your sleeves are printed and shipped.
